I was born in Monterrey, Mexico which has a population of over 5 million people and is the closest major Mexican metropolis to the United States. My parents started in the furniture Industry in 1962 and opened their First furniture store in 1969. When NAFTA was signed, our business was one of the first Importers of fine furnishings into Mexico. This helped us propel our business to offer dozens of high end brands to our customers in Northern Mexico and beyond. To this day, there are hundreds of homes filled with their custom furnishings. I grew up with very hard-working parents who instilled in us a love for commerce and excellent customer service. We were fortunate enough to travel to Europe quite often. During that pivotal time in my life, I developed a love for Fashion, Textiles and their coloring. This experience catapulted me to decide to go in a different direction and study Fashion and High Fashion Marketing.
Since my passion for fashion was so intense, I made the difficult choice of going to Milan, Italy to study Visual Arts. I was extremely lucky to be one of the few students to be accepted to the prestigious Domus Academy in Milan, Italy. The Domus Academy only accepts a select few students from a select few countries every year. I was one of only two students accepted from Mexico. I finished my Masters Degree in a Year and a Half. Upon completion of my Masters Degree, I returned to Monterrey, where my parents were in need of my support in their retail furniture store. I collaborated with the business, installed the first computer systems and helped them to prosper. In no time at all, I fell in love with the business. I worked directly with clients, with the help of my team and was able to fulfill their dreams, and this fulfillment also filled my spirit.
In 2002 we then decided to create our own showroom business, focusing on Fine Plumbing and decorative hardware products, opening a 6,000 Sq. Ft showroom. There, my husband and I began growing our business, which we sold in 2012. We had it for 10 very happy years.
In 2012 we decided to relocate to Dallas, Texas. A year after arrival, we were introduced to the Development and Construction business. We became inspired and bought a very beautiful double lot in Highland Park along with a great friend and partner, with the plan of building 8 Luxury Town homes for sale. I was responsible for selecting and specifying all of the interior and exterior esthetics of the project.
In 2015 we founded Living Modern Furnishings & Design an open to the public, Retail showroom, located in the very vibrant and hip area of South Dallas called Uptown/Oak Lawn.
Living Modern is a true one stop shop, where we offer home furnishings for Living, Dining, Bedroom as well as Area rugs, Original and Giclee Art, Accessories and Lighting. As the co-founder of Living Modern Furnishings & Design Norma’s role is Creative Director. She is responsible for the overall brand selections and Specification of projects as well as the Aesthetic of the showroom.
In the nearly 3 years we have been open we have been blessed by helping hundreds of valued clients furnish their homes. What makes us different is that Living Modern offers very personalized services which include visiting the home, taking measurements, assistance in specifying furnishings and installation/placement upon delivery.
I truly admire this great city and the people who live in it. I’m blessed to have the quality of life as is found in the other great metropolises as is New York City, Milan, Miami, etc.
